My work addresses the failure of technological reproduction, and its inevitable erosion of image. Images output by my failing inkjet printer were my starting point. My current paintings engage with the idea of the repetition of a calculated action, and the inconsistencies that result as it is performed again and again.

Setting myself up with a basic geometric pattern; a visual problem on each canvas, the final paintings become a product of my process as I work to solve each one, never knowing what the final painting will look like, or how long it will take to get there. These works are full of contradiction, with a constant sense of push and pull on the surface, the ‘finished’ work hovering somewhere in between.

The monotonous process of addition and subtraction, repeating patterns, techniques, and colours in each work, is contrasted by the performative action of its making, and the unpredictable nature of the paint. This has brought me to the realization that the more something is repeated, the more it changes. That ultimately, there is really no such thing as repetition, only variation.
